I'm a Data Scientist and NLP Researcher from Bawku, Upper East Ghana — and a native Kusaal speaker. When I searched for machine translation tools for my language in 2025, I found nothing open. I assembled a 34,568-pair Kusaal-English parallel corpus from three sources — GhanaNLP translations, YouVersion Bible alignments, and Wikipedia — then fine-tuned Meta's NLLB-200 on it. Result: BLEU 27.57 Kusaal→English, 13.72 English→Kusaal. The dataset and model are published on HuggingFace (PrinceAlhassanNasamu) and affiliated with GhanaNLP. That's how I think about data science — as infrastructure for communities that don't have it yet. 𝐊𝐮𝐬𝐚𝐚𝐥 𝐀𝐒𝐑 𝐌𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐥 Earlier this year I built a machine translation model for #Kusaal, my mother tongue, spoken by ~400,000 people in northern Ghana and Burkina Faso, not in Google Translate. Today I'm sharing what came next: the speech recognition model for Kusaal. Here's what it took: 📦 Dataset - built from bible data sources → 30,820 verse-level audio clips → 81.7 hours of 16kHz speech → Book-held-out train/val/test splits across 63 Bible books → Transcripts with full Kusaal orthography: ŋ, ɔ, ɛ, ʋ → Now public: alhassanprince/kusaal-asr-dataset 🤖 Model — Whisper-small + LoRA → 3.5M trainable parameters (1.44% of the model) → 2 epochs, 3,074 steps, ~4 hours on a single T4 → Final train loss: 0.730 → Val WER: 30.4% on held-out books 🎙️ Live demo — try it now → https://lnkd.in/epcedZER → Record yourself speaking Kusaal, get the transcript back For context: a 30.4% WER, trained on scripture audio alone, with a fully open dataset and reproducible training code, is a real starting point.
