Compassion Without Borders: How EGA Mentorship International Is Shaping My Mission to Restore Dignity to the Elderly

Some dreams begin with ambition. Others begin with compassion.

My dream began the moment I realised that every elderly person deserves to grow old with dignity, love, and the reassurance that they are never forgotten.

My name is Bawah Aisha, a 25 year old trained nurse from Bejamso in the Oti Region of Ghana and a proud graduate of Ho Nursing Training College. Like many young nurses, I completed my training with hope and excitement, looking forward to my government posting and the opportunity to serve my country.

As I waited, I discovered that purpose does not wait for an appointment letter.

Every day I saw elderly men and women whose lives had been filled with sacrifice, yet many now faced ageing with loneliness, fragile health, and limited support. I could not ignore what my heart continued to see. I realised that my nursing profession was not defined by where I worked but by how I chose to serve.

That conviction led me to dedicate my time to caring for elderly people in Teshie Nungua, where I continue to support older adults with compassion, respect, and professional care while awaiting my government posting.

What began as a personal commitment has become a lifelong mission.

A Journey Strengthened by EGA Mentorship International

Along this journey, EGA Mentorship International has become far more than an organisation to me. It has become a community that constantly reminds me that true leadership begins with service.

Through EGA, I have learned that meaningful change starts with one compassionate heart that chooses to act. The mentorship, leadership development, and culture of service promoted by EGA have strengthened my confidence to see beyond my current circumstances and focus on the lives I have the privilege to touch today.

EGA has empowered me to understand that every act of kindness creates hope, every person deserves dignity, and every young professional has the ability to become a catalyst for change.

Its vision has inspired me to believe that healthcare should never be limited to hospitals alone. It should reach homes, communities, and every vulnerable person who needs compassion.

The Elderly Are Our Living Heritage

Whenever I care for an elderly person, I do not simply see a patient.

I see a mother who raised children through sacrifice.

I see a father who laboured to build a family.

I see grandparents who preserved our traditions and values.

I see lives that have shaped our communities and our nation.

Their wrinkles tell stories of perseverance.

Their hands reflect decades of hard work.

Their wisdom is a priceless treasure that deserves honour rather than neglect.

Every conversation reminds me that nursing is not only about medicine. It is about restoring dignity, reducing loneliness, relieving suffering, and reminding people that they are deeply loved.

Sometimes the greatest healing comes from simply sitting beside someone, listening without rushing, and assuring them that they still matter.

My Commitment

I have made a personal commitment that wherever my nursing journey takes me, I will never stop advocating for quality and compassionate care for older adults.

I am committed to serving with integrity.

I am committed to treating every elderly person with patience and respect.

I am committed to being a voice for those whose needs are too often overlooked.

I am committed to using my profession to bring hope, comfort, and dignity to those who have given so much to society.

For me, nursing is not just a career. It is a lifelong promise to protect life, preserve dignity, and serve humanity.

My Vision for Ghana, Africa, and the World

My vision extends far beyond my own career.

I dream of a Ghana where every elderly person has access to compassionate, affordable, and quality healthcare regardless of their financial circumstances or where they live.

I dream of an Africa where ageing is celebrated rather than feared, where families and communities work together to ensure that older adults live with dignity, safety, and purpose.

I dream of a world where elderly care becomes a global priority, where innovation, education, and compassion unite to create healthcare systems that place humanity at the centre of every decision.

In the years ahead, I hope to contribute to initiatives that strengthen geriatric nursing, promote community based elderly care, train caregivers, and advocate for policies that improve the quality of life for ageing populations across continents.

I believe that caring for the elderly is not simply a healthcare responsibility. It is a reflection of our humanity.

Moving Forward with Hope

Although I continue to await my government posting, I know that my journey has already begun.

Every smile I restore reminds me why I chose nursing.

Every elderly person I serve strengthens my purpose.

Every life I touch encourages me to keep going.

I am deeply grateful to EGA Mentorship International for believing in young people like me and for creating an environment where compassion, leadership, and service are nurtured together.

This journey has taught me that success is not measured only by professional titles or positions. True success is found in the lives we transform, the hope we restore, and the love we freely give to those who need it most.

As I continue this path, I carry one simple promise in my heart.

To serve with compassion.

To honour every elderly person with dignity.

And to become part of a generation that leaves the world kinder than we found it.
